How takeaway can go a long, long way

Brain Ridgeway and his family decided to take their takeaway a little bit further than the dining room table to eat. A regular customer at the South Wales Echos 2005 takeaway of the year, Nahin spice centre in Cardiff, Brian decided to take the Indian cuisine to France.

While on holiday in the Loire Valley, Brain, owner of B A Ridgeway plumbing and heating service, along with his wife Jane and children Sam, 12, and Ben, 10, took the chilled Indian ready meals for six with them to share with friends. I normally go to the Nahin but this time we thought we would try the cold curry to take to France. Said Brain, 55, from Heath, Cardiff. It was very successful.

We brought curry for six people as we have friends out here to give them a treat and they thought it was superb. We would definitely do it again. Dilwar Ali, chef at the family-run takeaway business in Caerphilly Road, Heath, said: Its not the first our curries have been abroad we once had them sent to a customer in Los Angeles five years ago.

TIKKA YOUR TAKEAWAY TRAYS BACK

One of Cardiff's largest Indian takeaways has spiced up a local recycling scheme by urging their customers to return their foil containers.

The Nahin Spice Centre, in Caerphilly Road, currently serves up a total of 5,000 containers a week.
But no longer will those dishes go to waste, for the restaurant has joined a scheme set up by Scope, a charity for people with cerebral palsy.

And the curry house hopes that at least half of the containers it sends out will be returned by their customers. Once customers have finished with their curry, the containers will be sent on to Sully Skills Development Centre.

The centre sends them off for recycling and the money raised from the scheme is reinvested into the centre, which provides employment training courses for disabled people.Jeff Jones, Sully's recycling co-ordinator, said: "Not only will the customers of the Nahin Spice Centre be doing a spicy turn for Scope's Skills Development Centre for disabled people by raising much needed funds, they will also be helping to preserve the environment at the same time."
